Setting up a maize-based ethanol plant in India offers a profitable opportunity aligned with the government's ethanol blending program. Grain-based ethanol is increasingly preferred due to its lower water use and year-round availability. Our licensing-ready ethanol plant model covers everything from fermentation and distillation to OMC supply contracts. While fuel-grade ethanol export is restricted, the DDGS feed export from India remains a high-demand, profitable byproduct. Whether you're looking to understand ethanol production from corn or the complete ethanol distillation unit licensing process, this guide provides the roadmap.
Chhattisgarh is one of India’s leading maize-producing states, with multiple seasonal harvests. In Kondagaon district itself, where we operate, the government has already established a maize-based ethanol plant — confirming both raw material security and regional viability. This ensures not only reliable maize sourcing, but also access to byproducts like DDGS feed from the existing distillery for export or local distribution. The region offers a dual advantage: steady input supply and ready byproduct availability, reducing investment risk for new units.
Maize requires less water, grows faster, and is available year-round in many parts of India. When comparing maize ethanol vs sugarcane ethanol, maize wins on sustainability and geographical reach.
Maize Milling → Starch Extraction
Liquefaction → Sugar Breakdown
Fermentation → Ethanol Formation
Distillation → Purification
Dehydration → Fuel-grade ethanol
Optional → CO₂ recovery in ethanol distillery
Your ethanol plant can start with a production capacity of 30 KLPD and scale up to 200+ KLPD depending on land, maize availability, and investment.
Every tonne of ethanol production generates Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) – a high-protein, exportable animal feed.
✅ Export Allowed
✅ Buyers in Bangladesh, UAE, Kenya
✅ Long shelf life, bulk shipping–friendly
This makes ethanol plants dual-profit centers: sell ethanol to OMCs + export DDGS for global revenue.
To operate a legal ethanol distillery in India, you must obtain:
✅ IEC (Importer Exporter Code)
✅ PESO License
✅ State Excise Approval
✅ Environmental Clearance (NOC)
✅ BIS Certification
✅ Agreement with OMCs for ethanol offtake

Q1. Why is maize a better choice than sugarcane for ethanol production in India?
Maize requires less water, is available year-round, and grows faster than sugarcane. It ensures stable supply and is better suited to various regions, making it ideal for sustainable ethanol production.
Q2. What is the minimum capacity to start a maize-based ethanol plant?
You can start with a minimum capacity of 30 KLPD (Kilo Litres Per Day) and scale up to 200+ KLPD based on land, maize availability, and investment plans.
Q3. What is DDGS, and how is it exported from ethanol plants?
DDGS (Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles) is a high-protein byproduct used as animal feed. It is export-allowed and in high demand in countries like Bangladesh, UAE, and Kenya.
Q4. Is fuel-grade ethanol export allowed from India?
Currently, fuel-grade ethanol export is restricted by government policy. However, DDGS feed export is permitted and highly profitable.
Q5. What licenses are needed to start a maize ethanol plant in India?
You’ll need:
IEC (Importer Exporter Code)
PESO License
State Excise Approval
Environmental NOC
BIS Certification
Ethanol offtake agreement with OMCs
Q6. Can you help with land for setting up an ethanol plant?
Yes. We offer land partnership support in Kondagaon, Chhattisgarh with road, water, and power access. The land is offered on equity partnership basis.
Q7. Who handles the documentation and license applications?
You (the investor) will file and submit all documents. We provide full guidance, templates, and references to help you complete the process accurately.
Q8. What machinery is required for a maize-based ethanol plant?
You will need units for:
Maize milling & starch extraction
Fermentation & distillation
Dehydration for fuel-grade ethanol
Optional CO₂ recovery
DDGS dryer for feed processing
Q9. Do you provide machinery or connect us with vendors?
We don’t sell machinery but connect you to verified ethanol plant machinery manufacturers and help you select the right capacity and components.
Q10. Can I export DDGS from my ethanol plant directly?
